Content
ASTR210 & ASTR211: General Astronomy (3 Hours)
This unit discusses various objects, brief introduction of the Solar System.
Brief introduction of Stars, Sun and Galaxies
Planetary behavior- precession, liberation, sidereal and synodic periods and retrograde motions of solar system planets along with planetary configurations (elongation, conjunction, opposition, and quadrature) and phenomena (tides, seasons, eclipses, aurorae, meteor showers).
ASTR220 & ASTR221: Telescope & Observational Astronomy (3 Hours)
Telescope:This unit strongly focuses on telescope aberrations, useful equations related to telescopes, coordinate systems, spherical astronomy (basic), astrophotography (basic) and time. This unit will show you how to mount a telescope and use different types of eyepieces and Barlow lenses.
Observation Astronomy: - Identification of constellation, history of constellation, asterisms, zodiac and coordination systems are covered by this unit. Use of star maps, mobile apps Eg; Stellarium and computer software also included.
ASTR230 & ASTR231: Introduction to Cosmology (3 Hours)
This course strongly focuses on the history of cosmology, Olber's Paradox, Newton and Einstein universe, Expansion of universe, Hubble law, big bang theory, red shift, and geometry of space-time (basic introduction of general relativity and special relativity)
ASTR240 & ASTR241: Introduction to Basic Astrophysics (3 Hours)
Kepler's laws of motion to understand the motion of planets in the solar system and extend the Kepler's laws to other star systems.
Trigonometric parallax, Luminosity, Flux’s and brightness of stars
Magnitude system, hydrogen spectrum and Black body radiation.
Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation- To understand the gravitational force and
use it to understand the motion of objects in the universe.
